DESCRIPTION: Ground colour dark olive-brown, olive-grey
to almost black (iridescent bluish-grey when viewed obliquely) fading
to yellow on lower lateral surfaces. Lips and throat cream to white.
Ventral surfaces of body dull to bright yellow, brightest anteriorly.
Subcaudal scales dorsal colour. TL 2.0m. Individuals of 3.0m recorded.
Distinguished from L. olivaceus in possessing glossy, highly iridescent
scales, and yellow (vs cream) ventral surfaces.
PREFERRED HABITAT: Freshwater swamps, lagoons, creeks
and river margins (including man-made dams and reservoirs) of northern
Australia. Extends from Broome area, W.A., across northern N.T. to
northern Qld., ranging as far south as St Lawrence district. Extralimital
in southern New Guinea and eastern Lesser Sunda Islands.
MICROHABITAT: Shelters in hollow logs, stumps, abandoned
burrows, rock crevices and beneath mats of vegetation. During warmer
months much time is spent concealed among vegetation in shallow water.
