Large distinctive python with small fragmented head shields. Four subspecies are currently recognised though a number of distinctly patterned populations occur. It remains to be demonstrated whether these represent additional subspecies.

Ground colour pale yellowish brown to dark purplish brown. Pattern usually obscure, occasionally absent, comprising numerous relatively small dark smooth-edged blotches. These are mostly circular, rarely transversely elongate. Dark streak usually present from nostril through eye to temple.

Colour subject to considerable geographic variation. Varies from olive and olive-green through various shades of brown to almost black or even blue above, the skin between the scales ( displayed when the snake is aroused ) light blue.
