DESCRIPTION: A widespread species subject to considerable geographic variation
in colour, pattern and size. Dorsal ground colour ranges from light yellow to
almost black, usually with numerous small, scattered, lighter and darker flecks
and spots, which tend to be aligned transversely to form irregular, narrow cross-bands.
Sometimes the light cream or yellow markings are in the form of a distinct, dark-centered
ocelli. The limbs are usually finely spotted with white, cream or yellow. There
is usually a well defined black temporal stripe edged above and below with white
or cream. The tail, except for its tip, is light brown to black with light-coloured
scales tending to form narrow rings: the last several centimetres of the tail
are almost invariably white, cream or yellow. 1.6m
PREFERRED HABITAT: Found throughout most parts of continental Australia except
the extreme south-east and those forests of the east coast subject to very high
rainfall.
MICRO-HABITAT: A ground dwelling species found in a wide variety of habitats
from coastal sclerophyll forests to the sandy deserts of the interior. Shelters
in burrows ( it's own or those of other animals ), hollow logs, dense litter
etc. Ranges over large areas foraging for the insects, reptiles, birds, mammals
and carrion on which it feeds.
