Large Cyclodomorphus with long strongly-clawed digits and long prehensile tail. Head large and moderately distinct from neck. Tongue pink on adults and blue on juveniles; blue pigment is retained almost to adulthood in far north of range.

Southern Forest Dragon

Smallest Australian Hypsilurus. Nuchal and vertebral crests moderately large and continuous. Angular brow (common to both Australian Hypsilurus) is extremely pronounced on juveniles. Ground colour ranges through shades of brown, grey and green.

Spiny Tailed Monitor
Spiny Tailed Monitor

Ground colour black, dark brown to dull or rich reddish brown, often paler on vertebral region. Pattern usually prominent throughout most of range, becoming obscure and flushed with red south-westwards. Numerous transverse rows of pale reddish, yellow to cream ocelli extend over back, flanks and occasionally top of neck.
