Monitor |

| A widespread
species subject to considerable geographic variation in
colour, pattern and size. Dorsal ground colour ranges
from light yellow to almost black, usually with numerous
small, scattered, lighter and darker flecks and spots,
which tend to be aligned transversely to form irregular,
narrow cross-bands. |

to dark brown above, usually with mottled with darker
brown on the flanks and sometimes with a narrow, pale,
dark-edged lateral stripe from above the arm to groin.
A series of large, angular, blackish patches along the
middle of the back, often divided or displaced along the
vertebral line. |

Monitor |

| Extremely
large monitor with long slender tail, round in cross-section
at base and strongly laterally compressed distally. Two
distinct colour forms occur. Common widespread form: Pattern
prominent on juveniles, darkening to virtual absence on
adults. Ground colour of juveniles pale bluish grey spotted
with yellow. |
