DESCRIPTION: Rich chocolate-brown to black above, with
a series of pale cream to salmon-pink blotches, which may be irregular,
aligned in longitudinal rows, or which may form obscure, transverse
bands, especially on the tail: a variegated or reticulated pattern on
flanks, chest and abdomen, becoming more obscure in older adults. Sometimes
an obscure, dark brown to black temporal streak from above eye to above
ear. Head paler than dorsum, usually finely peppered with black. Lips
pale grey, sometimes peppered with black. Limbs above speckled with
black and white . 250 mm.
PREFERRED HABITAT: South-eastern SA, through southern
Vic to the highlands of southern and central NSW. Eastern and Northern
Tas and the islands of Bass Strait.
MICROHABITAT: A diurnal, ground dwelling lizard,
it feeds on a variety of insects, snails, carrion and wildflowers,
native fruits and berries. Shelters at night in hollow logs, ground
debris, etc.
