Carpet Python |
 |
| Large distinctive python
with small fragmented head shields. Four subspecies are
currently recognised though a number of distinctly patterned
populations occur. It remains to be demonstrated whether
these represent additional subspecies or mere colour variants.
M. s. spilota (Diamond Python) (Lacépède,
1804) represents the species in eastern N.S.W., from Northern
Rivers south to north-eastern Vic: Ground colour dark
grey to black. Most scales bear a cream spot. Clusters
of all cream or predominantly cream scales form roughly
diamond-shaped blotches over back and flanks. Lips cream
barred with black.

| Olive
Python |
 |
| Two subspecies recognised.
L. o. olivaceus: Ground colour dark olive, yellowish-brown
to olive-brown, fading laterally. Lips, side of throat,
neck and ventral surfaces white to cream. Lips may be
finely dotted with darker pigment. TL 2.5m (average).
L. o. barroni differs from nominate form in possessing
fewer midbody scale rows (58-63 vs 61-80), more numerous
ventral scales (374-411 vs 355-377), and in attaining
larger average size. Individuals up to 5.5m reported in
1923. Distinguished from L. mackloti in bearing cream
(vs yellow) ventral surfaces, and weakly glossed (vs highly
iridescent) body scales.

| Jungle
Python |
 |
| Medium-sized python,
not thick-bodied. The head has been likened to the head
of a dragon. Jungles have a prehensile tail which aids
them in arboreal pursuits. They are not fully aboral like
the tree boas and pythons but they will climb on occasion.
The brightest jungle carpet python is jet black with bright
yellow markings and a pure-white underside. Average colours
are yellow-tan blotches on a black base with a pure-white
underside. Neonates are tan, black, and white and will
lighten with each shed, reaching adult colour by age two
or three. Some specimens have been known to darken with
each shed; if you want a bright individual view the parents
first, or buy a one- or two-year-old snake. This is a
nocturnal snake, feeding, shedding, and generally most
active during the night.

| Childrens
Python (Maculosus) |
 |
| Ground colour pale yellowish
brown to dark purplish brown. Pattern usually obscure,
occasionally absent, comprising numerous relatively small
dark smooth-edged blotches. These are mostly circular,
rarely transversely elongate. Dark streak usually present
from nostril through eye to temple. Ventral surfaces whitish
with an opalescent sheen. TL 1.02 m. Distinguished from
A. stimsoni by nature of pattern (usually weak to absent
with little or no indication of a pale anterior ventrolateral
stripe vs strong, normally including a pale anterior ventrolateral
stripe).
All feeding well.
