Shingleback Lizard

Largest member of C. reticulatus group, bearing low nuchal crest. Ground colour pale yellowish brown (often flushed with pale orange on head), marked over head and body with brown, reddish brown to grey reticulum. Narrow vertebral stripe of ground colour extends from nape to hips or base of tail. Ventral surfaces whitish, usually bearing coarse grey reticulum on throat. Breeding males develop bright orange-red flush over head and throat. SVL 115 mm. Distinguished from C. reticulatus by colour of claws (pale vs dark), and number and alignment of femoral and preanal pores: 6-17 arranged in a curve, sweeping forward to anterior thigh (vs 15-28 arranged in a straight line along rear of thigh).

Ground colour pale or dark grey, brownish grey to dull reddish brown. Juveniles and populations from eastern half of range tend to have less red pigment. Pattern usually obscure to absent, particularly on adults. When present, paravertebral series of large elongate pale blotches extend from nape to hips. Similar lateral series may also be present. Belly of mature males black. This usually extends onto lower flanks. SVL 250 mm.

Pale grey to dark brown above, usually with mottled with darker brown on the flanks and sometimes with a narrow, pale, dark-edged lateral stripe from above the arm to groin. A series of large, angular, blackish patches along the middle of the back, often divided or displaced along the vertebral line, and bordered below by a broad, pale, dorso-lateral stripe from the nape to the base of the tail. This stripe may be broken up into a series of lozenge shaped bars by downward extensions of the dark mid-dorsal blotches.

One fact that is known about this dragon is that it is preyed upon by venemous P. colleti snakes, and have adopted a defense behavior of hiding in cracks in the soil.
